Life with PoTS by Charlotte D'alimonte

Life with PoTS by Charlotte D'alimonte  Need an empowerment boost? Just read Charlotte D'alimonte's speech about her own battles with a rare sickness called PoTS and how no matter what you've been through, your disability doesn't define you! Charlotte D'alimonte (8B) Hi, my name is Charlotte D’Alimonte. If you’ve ever seen me in gym class, you probably noticed me hovering on the sidelines—leaning against the wall, cheering from the bench, or stepping in for a minute before backing off. But it wasn’t always like that. There was a time when I was sprinting across the court, diving for the ball, laughing without worrying about limits. Gym used to be one of my favourite classes. But in 2024, that changed. That year, I was diagnosed with a semi-rare condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or PoTS. It affects about 1 in a million people. It sounds made-up, like something from a TV show—but the way it wrecks my daily life is very real. PoTS messes...

Are we alone in the universe? Let's find out!!!!

Are we alone in the universe? By Sam Melanson in 8B  Imagine if we could meet the aliens we see in movies? That's what 8B student, Sam Melanson, decided to research for his speech! From Earth - like planets to some of Jupiter's moons, let's find out if there is life in a galaxy far, far away!  By: Sam Melanson Star Wars. Easily one of the most complex and diverse fiction works made for the big screen. From the talented mind of George Lucas comes the heroic, skilled pilot-turned-Jedi Luke Skywalker, to the stubborn but loyal Han Solo, from the evil and powerful Palpatine to the infamous Darth Vader. Since 1977, Star Wars has entertained, fascinated, and inspired the minds of all ages. One of the main highlights of the franchise is the universe that Star Wars features; it comes with many different intelligent life forms. It’s all contained in one huge galaxy and has different regions. The Outer Rim, where the humble Luke Skywalker grows up on the balmy desert planet of T...

The Ethics of Using Artificial Intelligence - Maxwell 8

Image
Did you know that over 77% of people in Canada are using artificial intelligence, and only 33% actually realize they are using it? I am living in the first generation that has access to powerful AI, and it will make a powerful impact on everyone in this world, especially us students. I have always been fascinated by how technology and humanity intersect, and how our innovative creations can shape our world. As we know, artificial intelligence can be used as a helpful tool, but when will it start to make its own decisions? This brings me to my three points I would like to address about artificial intelligence: AI’s unbiased decisions and fairness, the use of AI in the healthcare sector, and AI’s privacy and security. Artificial intelligence may seem neutral and smart; however, it was created from human data. This means that if AI has biased inputs from the human developers, it can evolve into a technology that is one-sided and holds unfair opinions. Did you know that many companies are ...

STEM Students Build Creative Amusement Parks!

Image
STEM Students Build Creative Amusement Parks! This week, our students took STEM learning to new heights—literally! In an exciting hands-on project, students were challenged to design and build attractions for their own themed amusement parks. Drawing on engineering principles, creativity, and teamwork, the results were nothing short of spectacular. Themes ranged from the whimsical to the wild, including candies, seasons, forests, jungles, video games, and even natural disasters. Each team chose a unique concept and brought it to life through a variety of amusement park rides and attractions. Roller coasters looped through sugary landscapes, Ferris wheels rose above jungle treetops, and drop towers simulated the thrill of an erupting volcano or a sudden snowstorm. The project encouraged students to think critically about structural design, force, motion, and safety. They used everyday materials like cardboard, popsicle sticks, and string to build scaled-down versions of classic ...
