The Ethics of Using Artificial Intelligence - Maxwell 8
Did you know that over 77% of people in Canada are using artificial intelligence, and only 33% actually realize they are using it? I am living in the first generation that has access to powerful AI, and it will make a powerful impact on everyone in this world, especially us students. I have always been fascinated by how technology and humanity intersect, and how our innovative creations can shape our world. As we know, artificial intelligence can be used as a helpful tool, but when will it start to make its own decisions? This brings me to my three points I would like to address about artificial intelligence: AI’s unbiased decisions and fairness, the use of AI in the healthcare sector, and AI’s privacy and security.
Artificial intelligence may seem neutral and smart; however, it was created from human data. This means that if AI has biased inputs from the human developers, it can evolve into a technology that is one-sided and holds unfair opinions. Did you know that many companies are now using artificial intelligence to help evaluate job applications? These AI-powered systems swiftly analyze resumes, assess the applicants’ skills and experiences, and can even evaluate interview performance. Companies want to improve efficiency and reduce time demands. Imagine applying for your first part-time job with great skills and volunteer experience, but an AI system ranks you lower because it favors different applicants. This has affected many people as more companies use AI. We must be cautious about how we manage AI, despite its potential benefits.
Have you ever heard of artificial intelligence working in the healthcare industry? Yes, you heard that right! Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we take care of patients in hospitals and clinics. Personally, the first time I encountered AI in healthcare, was when I went to a pediatrician near my house. He used an AI app that evaluated our conversation to help highlight the main points of what I was saying. AI algorithms can also help identify patterns and predict the likelihood of certain diseases such as diabetes or cancer.
Artificial intelligence is expected to play a significant role in healthcare systems in the future, addressing the shortage of doctors and reducing wait times. By understanding patients' needs and reducing unnecessary trips to the doctor’s office, AI can improve patient care, leading to lower wait times and increased availability, especially in densely populated areas like Toronto. This could help address the current issue of a shortage of doctors.
Another ongoing issue is the lack of privacy with artificial intelligence. It is becoming a major concern. People may not realize how much information they give away by accepting cookies or agreeing to terms. This can lead to serious data breaches and leaked information. Did you know that AI is listening to your conversations. For example, mobile assistants like Siri and Gemini, are triggered by key words, however, they are also listening to background conversations. Have you ever noticed that you receive advertisements on a product that you are interested in buying? In your phone, the AI learns your interests and shows them more often on websites and home pages. AI in surveillance cameras can also identify people. These risks breaching privacy rights and misuse.
In conclusion, the rise of artificial intelligence forces us to ask not just what AI can do but what AI should do. Artificial intelligence can be extremely helpful in some sectors; however, we need to become cautions around artificial intelligence due to its development issues such as biased decisions. It is reshaping lives and rapidly changing our ways of life. We are currently implementing these tools into health care and using AI in surveillance cameras. When we are using AI, we need to know what is right and what is wrong. In order to do so, we should establish clear ethical guidelines and invest in government regulated AI organizations that would make the AI strictly nonbiased. We can do this by using diverse and representative data, supporting fairness aware algorithms, and following ethical guidelines. I believe that if we develop AI in these correct terms, it will have a positive impact on not just our generation, but generations to come.nal

I believe that this post is absolutely correct! We need to utilize AI in the correct way, and there are both good sides and bad sides of AI. Good post!
ReplyDeleteI never knew that AI had so many down sides, this is really eye opening!!!
